WEEK 27 – Gyprock and stairs make a house feel like a home! (26-30 Oct)

WEEK 27  – Gyprock makes a house feel like a home, and stairs! (26-30 Oct)

Thankfully, with every piece of wood in the place checked and made plumb, we could have the gyprockers start. The upside was, they were incredibly diligent and efficient, The downside, they did not speak a single word of English… so our notes saying things like “no cornice here” were completely ignored – doh! Lots of patch ups needed.

An architect friend had said your frames are as big as the house gets, after that we add layer upon layer and it closes in smaller and smaller. Somehow, to me, the gyprock made it feel so much bigger. Clean uncluttered lines with the frames now concealed. I was SO excited!

The most exciting moment of the week was then seeing our stairs being installed. There is something very special about being able to walk up those stairs for the first time, rather than climb a ladder – it tipped the balance, more home than building site. I felt a little teary thinking about our daughters growing up here and seeing them walk down those stairs all dolled up for their school formals and first dates and, God willing, maybe even their wedding dresses ready to leave for the church.

Gyprock through the garage, the vertical column is our laundry chute.
Here is the storage area for the guest room/study, put in place as a favour from our slightly depressed carpenter!
The wall returning for the study desk, and a view toward the family room in the foreground, meals room to the far right and through the door into the playroom on the far left.
Looking into the kitchen, with the door way to the walk in pantry.
One day, we'll see these baby girls walking down those stairs, not in princess dress ups, but dressed as grown up, beautiful women.

 Stainless steel ballisters
Finally the form takes shape with two large voids (the main being a double storey void at the entry foyer where we will put some cool feature lights). This should transfer some lovely natural light through the upper floor.
A view from the upper living room, between the two voids, towards the big double door entry to the master bed room... (master suite? It ended up a bit oversized!)
